Ascension, 2004
Collaboration with Sergey Tychina

Vyacheslav Akhunov

Born in 1948 in Osh, Kirghizstan; lives in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

In "Ascension", Sergey Tychina struggles to climb, mostly on hands and feet, the seemingly endless loops of the narrow spiral staircase in a tower in the historical centre of Buchara, wearing a traditional caftan and an Uzbek hat. After having reached the top, he opens a notebook and watches the beginning of his ascent in a video, which then turns into reality, so that the laborious climbing of the tower starts all over again.

In "Corner", Tychina says a namas, a prayer, at various places, wearing Muslim headgear. He does not turn towards Mecca, though, but places himself in corners very close to the walls, thus entirely focussing on himself.

In both works, existential metaphors of universal scope emerge from the picturesque local colour. Especially in "Corner", the meditative elements of the Sufi religion play an important role.
